From 3/4" rough lumber,
wedge segments are jigged
and individually cut.
The appropriate compound
angles are determined by
trigonometric calculation.
The segments are then
hand glued and clamped
into half circles and allowed
to dry. Contrasting wood inlay is added at this time
if called for by design. The
halves are then sanded to flat adjoining surfaces and glued into a half-circle.
After assembly, the hollow form is mounted onto a lathe for carving, sanding and detail work. Reverse chucking is used for final finishing. Depending on design, two halves are turned individually and then joined for a complete hollow form. Bases, lips and tops are separately assembled, carved and added.
